BABY'S EYES

What every paren needs to know to keep those little tots healthy....

CLOGGED TEAR DUCT:

What it is- Just like it soudns, the tiny ducts that drain your baby's tears becomes blocked.

What it looks like - During the day, his eyes may seem excessively goopy; you'll also notice a yellow discharde, or pus, from the corner of the eye. When he wokes up, his eyes lids may even be stuck together (thick of an extreme form of sleep crust)

How to treat it -- Apply a warm compress to the inner corner of the eyes and massage gently in a semicircle towards the nose, five to ten strokes at least six times a day. (you might have luck doin this while he's asleep or distracted by a feeding) If you dont see any improvement within three days, call your doctor. He may prescribe an antibacterial ointment or drops to prevent the infection from getting worse untill the duct opens on its own..

CONJUNCTIVITIS

What it is- Commonly known as pinkeye (sore eyes, piskat) conjunctivitis is a contagious bacterial infection that causes an inflammation of the thin, transparent covering of the eye.

What it looks like - The white of one or both of your tot's eyes will appear very red; he may also have draining pus and/or crust.

How to treat it - Your doc will prescribe antibiotic drops or ointment that you apply to the inside of the lower kids. Keep your baby home from daycare for the first 24hours of treatment; when he's extremely contagious; to minimize the spread at home, wash your hands frequently, avoid sharing towels or washcloths, and try not to touch your own eyes...
